Teammates Mentoring Program
January 26, 2010
We are excited to report that we are beginning to match some of our mentors with students. We would really like to match males with males and females with females if at all possible. We currently have a low number of males that have offered to be mentors. If you are an adult that would like to be a mentor for one of our BV students, please contact Sarah Malone (BVS – 643-2251 or BVN – 674-3248).
Youth Basketball Program
The youth basketball program got underway on Saturday, January 9, 2010. Our young basketball players will play 6 league games. All games are played on Saturdays. We would appreciate anyone that would like to volunteer to help with the program. We need people to referee, run the scorer’s table, work at the concession stand, and clean up after the games. If you’d like to volunteer to help with any of these games, please call Mike Weber (643-5742) or Becky Berens (643-5419). If you’d like to come watch our teams play, their schedule is below:
Saturday, January 30 vs. Manning @ Manning REC Center
Saturday, February 6 vs. Schleswig @ Dow City
Saturday, February 13 vs. Woodbine @ Woodbine
The following schedule is always followed for these games:
4th grade girls – 9:00 AM
5th grade girls – 9:45 AM
6th grade girls – 10:30 AM
4th grade boys – 11:15 AM
5th grade boys – 12:00 PM
6th grade boys – 12:45 PM
The Boyer Valley TeamMates mentoring program began matching students and mentors in January. Students meet with their mentors one hour a week. Currently we have students in 6th grade and 3rd grade matched. During the one-hour meetings mentors listen and talk to their student, play games, read books, and build a relationship.
Starting next fall we would like to match students in other grades. The application process takes approximately 3 months. If you are interested in becoming a mentor, please consider filling out the paperwork now so it will be processed by next school year.
Boyer Valley Teammates would like to thank the Optimist Club for their $50 donation to help cover background checks. A background check is completed on each mentor and costs $25. If your club or organization would like to make a donation, it can be sent to TeamMates of Boyer Valley, Boyer Valley School c/o Sharon Lee, 1102 Iowa Ave, Dunlap, IA 51529.
In April, TeamMates will be holding a One Hour Walk. The goal of the walk is to raise awareness for the need for more mentors. The walk will be held the weekend of April 16-18. More information will be available in the April/May newsletter.
